SYRACUSE — Syracuse Board of Zoning Appeals approved two cases Thursday, Oct. 20. Both of the items of business on the agenda were continued cases from August.
Ernest and Christine Wingard’s petition for an exception was approved. They want to allow the construction of an oversized accessory building that is 1,226 square feet, where the ordinance only allows 576 square feet. The property is located at 808 S. Lakeside Drive.
The couple owns two, empty lots across the street from their residence. They want to put a building on the two lots. The couple will use the building for boat storage, a workshop and for general storage.
It meets the setback requirements, said their attorney, Steve Snyder. He said it will enhance the neighborhood.
One neighbor, who lives in the neighborhood and was at the meeting, said he had no objection and a letter from Wawasee Property Owners Association also said it supports the exception.
Another continued case was Brandon and Elizabeth Shaw’s petition for a variance. The couple want to allow the construction of a deck 1 foot from the east property line and 4 feet from the water’s edge. The Shaw’s property is located at 406 E. Medusa St.
The variance was approved with the condition that a rail, no more than 3 feet high, be installed. It also must meet the platform criteria of no more than 12 inches high. An ordinance does allow a platform. A landscape-type retaining wall will also be built on the lake side of the property.
The board is looking for a fifth member. Anyone who is interested can contact the Syracuse town manager, Henry DeJulia.
The next meeting is at 6 p.m. Nov. 17, at Syracuse Town Hall.
